It served for nine years before being changed to Tarkwa School of Mines in 1961.This move was mainly propelled by the need to train more manpower for the country’s mining industry. University of Mines and Technology cut off points
UMaT Ghana cut off points form part of the admission prerequisites. The points usually vary from one course to another. For instance, in UMaT courses, 2018, the cut-off for BSc Mathematics is eleven-this is actually the highest point in the entire course list. Whichever way, even though the points only enable a specified portion of all the candidates, they are set according to the level of stress the programmes demand.
Alongside cut-off points, there are essential academic conditions and UMaT preparation material that applicants are required to adhere to. For example, in Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology, all candidates are required to have at least credits in all the three core subjects, which comprise of English language, Integrated Science, and mathematics. This should be accompanied by other elective subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Elective Mathematics. The minimum aggregate for entry is thirty-six for WASSCE applicants and twenty-four for SSSCE applicants.
As for applicants with ordinary and advanced levels certificates, they need to have passes in five GCE subjects under ‘O' levels including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. As for GCE ‘A' level, they need to have passes in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
Mature applicants need to be at least twenty-five years old and have Senior Secondary School certificates or General Certificate Examination ‘O’ level certificates. The certificates should have credits in five subjects with Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject part of it.
In addition to all that, they need to pass an examination conducted by the school or undergo an interview to show how versed they are in that particular field. Generally, they need to have adequate experience in that relevant course before seeking admission.
As for applicants who have qualified at the minimum entry of thirty-six points but unfortunately have not attained the cut-off aggregate for particular UMaT courses offered, can still apply for admission. Nonetheless, they need to have reliable sponsorship that covers their fees for the whole course before being admitted for studies.
Similarly, international students who are seeking admission for UMaT Ghana courses also have a chance of admission if they have genuine and recognized certifications from their home countries. On the same note, they should have a certificate in English as it is vital and mandatory as well. This mostly applies to the kind of students who are applying using an international Baccalaureate in science.

Postgraduate students are also not left behind. When applying for either Master of Science (MSc) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil), they need to have a first class or second class (Upper Division) in their undergraduate grades in the relevant field.
Holders of UMaT Diploma are also eligible for admission if they have professional experience of years or more in the relevant field and have proven to be competent enough.
