Ghana’s biggest night in music, popularly known as the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is is just around the corner and many players, especially the artistes are gearing up for the night of their lives.

The nominees have already been announced and the quest for recognition and celebration has started in earnest since all the nominees are hopeful of winning laurels at the ceremony.

Even though this year’s edition of the VGMAs is its 19th ever since its inception, there is already the promise of an unforgettable night with the information that has been gathered so far.

Among the nominees were last year’s “Artiste of the Year” winner, Joe Mettle, “Highest” album maker, Sarkodie, award-winning dancehall acts, Stonebwoy and Samini and a host of other ‘year-on-year’ nominees.

This year’s awards night which promises to have a twist to it announced among the nominees, “One Corner” hitmaker, Patapaa Amisty, late dancehall act, Ebony Reigns, known in real life as Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng and longtime absentee, Charles Ni Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale.

1. She has recorded hit songs

From 'Poison' to 'Date Ur Fada' to 'Hustle', all three songs from the late artiste have been received well by many Ghanaians and even by Africans in the diaspora. These songs have resonated so well with many Ghanaians that right from the get go, they were destined for greatness getting unlimited radio play.

2. She is entering the competition for the first time with a shout

Late Ebony Reigns, even after a short stint in the competitive music industry, is making her first entry into the big leagues of award ceremonies in Ghana and without a doubt stands a good chance of winning the coveted “Artiste of the Year” award.

More often than not, the first entrants walk away with laurels ahead of the more ‘regular’ nominees.

Arguably, Ebony appeared in the news more than any of her female colleagues and even some popular male artistes.

The late award-winning actress was in the news for many reasons owing to her growing popularity. Apart from having a lot of fans, she also had a number of critics. Either way, it helped keep her name in media circles and on the lips of many Ghanaians.
