- GFA Vice President George Afriyie has been dismissed following a meeting of the Association's Executive Committee on Tuesday
- No reasons have been given yet but a new FA Vice President is expected to be announced
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the sacking of its Vice President, George Afriyie.
This follows a meeting of the GFA's Executive Committee on Tuesday, April 24.
According to the GFA's official Twitter handle, we should expect a new Vice President soon.
"Breaking News: Mr George Afriyie has beebeen released of his duties as the Vice President of the GFA following a meeting of the Execuitve Committee. A new Vice President will be announced soon," the statement announcing the sacking read.
Though the Twitter statement failed to give the exact reasons why the Executive Committee decided to sack George Afriyie, reports suggest that the dismissal is in relation with Afriyie's decision to declare to contest 2019 GFA elections after current president, Kwasi Nyantakyi publicly announced his decision not to seek a fourth term.
Afriyie, who succeeded Fred Crentsil, was named the Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in 2015 for a four-year term in office which would have ended in 2019.
Afriyie, 45, was named by the GFA president in the accordance to Article 30.3 of the First Amendment of the GFA Statutes passed by Congress on December 30, 2014 which states that: “At the maiden meeting of the Executive Committee, the President shall appoint from the membership of the Executive, the Vice President of the GFA and three other members who shall together with the President form the five (5) members of the Emergency Committee.”
The former GFA vice president has vast experience in football administration in Ghana after serving in various leadership positions with several clubs in the country including Swedru All Blacks, Accra Great Olympics and Liberty Professionals.
He has also worked with the various national teams in leadership positions.
Afriyie, who until his appointment was the chairman of the Black Stars management committee. He served on various management committees of the national teams.
He served as the management committee chairman for the Black Meteors and Black Satellites as well as working on the Premier League Board and the Division One League Board.
He is a current member of the CAF Marketing and TV Rights Committee.
