- A man was nearly beaten to death at Kantamanto over suspicions that he was stealing used sanitary pad from a public toilet
- Abubakar Awudim was attacked to the point of unconsciousness after he was found picking a polythene bag reportedly contained some used pads from the toilet
Some traders at Kantamanto in Accra on Wednesday nearly beat a man to death over suspicions that he was a used sanitary pad thief.
According to reports, Abubakar Awudim, 44, was accosted by the traders when he attempted to pick a polythene bag full of used pads from a public toilet in the area.
After accosting him, an eyewitness who spoke to Adom FM disclosed, some men started beating Awudim mercilessly.
While some of them hit the suspected thief with their fists, others used sticks, metals, and anything they could literally lay their hands on.
The eyewitness further disclosed that though the suspect had pleaded that he was a trader from Tema who had come to buy goods, his attackers continued to beat him till he fell unconscious.
Abubakari, who gained consciousness after the severe beatings given to him, stated that he was innocent of the allegations being levelled against him.
“I am a trader in Tema and I only came to Accra to buy some goods. The polythene bag they claim I took from the public toilet had nothing in it. I only wanted to put some items in it after visiting the gents.
I reached for the bag only to be attacked by some men claiming I was stealing the pad for rituals but that was not the case," he explained in Twi.
Ordinarily, one would think that a used sanitary pad is not something that should trigger a mob action but it is a big deal in Ghana because many believe that such things could be used for 'juju' purposes.
