- Gabby Otchere Darko has dismissed reports that he is inciting Akyems against the Asantehene
- Otchere Darko says he is not stupid to pitch his mother’s people against his father’s people
A leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has denied claims that he is undermining the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
According to him, such claims are “perplexing”, adding that he is not “stupid” to do such a thing.
On Wednesday, some leading executives of the NPP trooped to the Manhyia Palace to beg the Asantehene.
The executives were captured in photos kneeling in front of the Ashanti overlord to beg for forgiveness after he complained about some members of government trying to pitch him against the Akyems.
In the aftermath, a group calling itself the Concerned Youth of Ashanti accused Mr. Otchere-Darko and Executive Secretary to the President, Asante Bediatuo, as being the men who actions angered the King.
The group accused the two NPP executives of undermining the Asantehene and pitching him against the Akyem Stool.
“A couple of years ago under the leadership of Akufo-Addo, his nephew and relatives started making some comments concerning the Asantehene and the Asantehene himself mentioned Gabby Asare Otchere Darko and Asante Bediatuo at the Manhyia Palace,” leader of the group, Nana Agyenim Boateng told Accra-based Starr FM.
“Everything they are saying about the Asantehene, he is in Manhyia Palace but he has heard of it…so it is a warning and an advice to them.”
However, in a swift rebuttal, Mr. Otchere-Darko has denied ever undermining the Asantehene or even trying to put him in bad standing with the Akyems.
In a Twitter post, he said it would be “stupid” to attempt such a move, especially when his mother and father are from Asante and Akyem respectively.
“Am I so stupid that I would work against my own interest and turn one half of me against the other half by inciting my mother’s people against my father’s people; that I would bite the very hand that feeds us politically? Perplexing,” Mr. Otchere-Darko wrote.
Reports suggest that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is planning to lead a government delegation to the Manhyia Palace to resolve the matter.
