World Cup 2018

The FIFA World Cup 2018 will be hosted by Russia from 14th June to 15th July in 12 different venues. A total of 32 teams including the host team Russia will get involved in the world’s most largest sports event. Among all the 32 nations, 20 teams will try to improve their performances compared to the 2014 FIFA World Cup edition. Panama and Iceland are the new entrants in this year’s edition. Both of them will try their luck out in the biggest stage of football for the first time. The winners will automatically get to play the next edition of the World Cup (2021). World Cup qualifiers

First, we start with the qualifiers round where a whopping 210 teams from all around the world took part to fetch a chance for playing in this big event. A total of 872 matches were played in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The most amazing fact is the number of goals that were being scored during the World Cup qualifiers 2018, which stands at 2,454. Robert Lewandowski of Poland along with Mohammad Al-Sahlawi (Saudi Arabia) and Ahmed Khalil (UAE) entertained the spectators with their scintillating performances. They scored 16 goals each which is really astonishing. Indonesia, Kuwait and Zimbabwe were barred from taking part in the tournament even before its inception. South Sudan, Kosovo, Gibraltar and Bhutan made their 1st appearances in the qualifiers zone. Myanmar, who was earlier banned from taking part in the qualifiers, was later allowed to play their matches in another country. The main draw in the qualifying stage occurred in Strenla, Saint Petersburg. The first draw held in Timor Leste (Dili) on 12th March 2015. Chiquito Do Carmo, a player form East Timorese scored the 1st goal of the qualifiers stage.

The qualifiers round took place in – Asian (AFC), African (CAF), Central, Northern America and Caribbean (CONCACAF), South American (CONMEBOL), Oceanian (OFC) and European (UEFA) regions. 1. In the AFC region, a total of 46 teams participated in the competition where 4 teams got directly selected for the main event whereas 1 spot was booked for the winner of the inter-confederation play-off.

2. In the World Cup 2018 qualifiers Africa region (CAF), a total of 54 teams took part in the competition where 5 teams got directly selected for the main tournament. 4. In the World Cup qualifiers South America region (CONMEBOL), a total of 10 teams participated in the competition where 4 teams got directly selected for the main event whereas 1 place was kept for the winner of the inter-confederation play-off. Brazil and Argentina were the main attraction in the South America World Cup qualifiers zone. World Cup draw 2018

The 2018 world cup draw took place on 1st December, 2017 in the Kremlin Palace, Moscow. Mr. Gary Linekar hosted the show along with the mesmerizing beauty Maria Komandnaya. Both of them were assisted by a panel of 8 experts. Russia along with Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, France, Germany, Poland and Belgium were considered as top seeds prior to the world cup draw. All the 32 teams were allocated to 4 groups namely Pot 1, 2, 3 & 4 each consisting of 8 teams to make the grouping process much easier.

After that, those 4 Pots were emptied and 8 Groups were formed consisting of 4 teams each. Russia held the top position of Group A whereas the other 7 top seeds were given the honors of leading the remaining groups (B to H) respectively. Many renowned football stars from the past came down to Moscow to be a part of this historic moment.
