The collapse of a dilapidated school building at Wassa Dormaa in the Western Region has reportedly claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl.
The school building collapsed during a heavy downpour due to the accompanying strong winds which pulled it down.
The deceased, Susanna Bokgro, a final year student of Wassa Dormaa Junior High School (JHS) who was among others seeking shelter under the building died on the spot.
According to the assemblyman for the area, Stephen Mawuli Dogbe, who confirmed the incidence on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Wednesday morning, several other students were also injured.
He explained that it was raining with heavy winds when the students went in search of proper shelter.
But the deceased who decided to seek shelter behind the building met her untimely death when the building collapsed.
The others, Dogbe added, sustained varying degrees of injuries with one in critical condition at the Twifo Praso government hospital.
The assemblyman noted that the school was in session as at the time the incident took place so it has affected teaching and learning because the pupils will have nowhere to sit.
Apart from the school building, Dogbe disclosed, some residents in the town have been rendered homeless as over 30 houses have collapsed as a result of the storms.
