The date Sunday May 13, 2018 will forever live in Spanish football history. Last night, lowly Levante ended Barcelona’s unbeaten run in the league that had gone on for over a year. But how much do you know about giant-killer Emmanuel Boateng?
Levante’s win comes in no small way thanks to Ghanaian striker Emmanuel Boateng. He scored a scored a hat-trick against Barcelona, being only the second player in 13 years to do so. The last player to do so was Uruguayan Diego Forlan.
But these are five things most people did not know about the pacy forward.
1. Humble beginnings
Boateng started his footballing career with Charity Stars FC, a colt football team in Accra. Not coming from a privileged background, he was more than happy to move to Europe by the age of 17.
The idea was to play where conditions were right so he could help his family in Ghana.
2. No league football in Ghana
The Levante striker never played professionally in Ghana. He is unlike many who make the journey overseas after gaining experience in Ghana.
Emmanuel Boateng was surprisingly signed by a top flight European side, Rio Ave, while he had no professional experience.
3. He has never played for the Black Stars
The striker has never played for the senior national team, the Black Stars. This will come as a surprise to many especially because his performances have been lauded by many.
Earlier this season, he scored in his sides 2-2 draw against Real Madrid
4. Shares the same name with LA Galaxy forward
This fact has confused a number of pundits and fans in Ghana. Another Ghanaian player, also a striker, has the name “Emmanuel Boateng”. This other striker is a teammate of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at LA Galaxy.
5. A big fan of Yaa Pono
Emmanuel Boateng is not all about his job. He is not shy his love for the music of artiste Yaa Pono.
The musician even posted a video of the footballer jamming to one of his latest songs.
