Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Honorable Kennedy Agyapong, has admitted that the Akufo-Addo-led government was nepotistic in nature due to the number of high positions being held by the president’s family members.
However, the lawmaker added that in his view, the nepotism which was termed by the opposition as “Family and Friends” government was justified because of the high level of education of the president’s family members who have been appointed.
President Akufo-Addo’s cousins in government include Nana Asante Bediatuo, the Executive Secretary to the presidency as well as Works and Housing Minster Samuel Atta Akyea and Transport Minister Kwesi Amoako Atta. The president’s daughter, Gyankroma Akufo Addo, also serves on the Creative Arts Council Board.
In comparing the previous government to the current one, some people indicated that the Mahama-led administration was far less noted as a “Family and Friends” government since very few people from ex-president’s Mahama’s family held government positions.
In reacting to this claim, the controversial Member of Parliament is noted to have said, “It is not Akufo Addo’s fault that his family members are more educated than the family members of Mahama. They are qualified for the position they are holding.”
Social media users have waded into the matter and have expressed their opinion over the “Family and Friends government tag labelled on the NPP government.
