- Akufo-Addo has ordered for the arrest of the GFA President, Kwesi Nyantakyi
- Nyantakyi has been caught in an investigative piece indulging in fraudulent acts
- But lawyer Yaw Oppong has said Akufo-Addo has no power to cause Nyantakyi’s arrest
Private Legal Practitioner, Yaw Oppong, has challenged President Akufo-Addo’s move to have Kwesi Nyantakyi arrested.
According to a report sighted by YEN.com.gh on Kasapa Fm, Lawyer Oppong said the President has no power to cause the arrest of the President of the Ghana Football Association(GFA).
His comment comes in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s order to the Ghana Police to arrest Kwesi Nyantakyi.
President Akufo-Addo issued this order in connection with an exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Lawyer Oppong was reportedly speaking in an interview with GBC.
According to him, the President is required by law to first liaise with the security agencies to investigate and get to the bottom of the matter without any personal interference.
“I am not sure that the President has ordered for the arrest of Nyantakyi, and I’m not sure that he even has the power to order his arrest."
"What he’s done or should have done or may have done, is to make a complaint to the Police that is consistent with Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution that all of us have a duty to protect and preserve public policies, expose and combat nuisance and waste of public funds and property."
“…In my understanding, if it is indeed true that the President has ordered for the arrest of the gentleman, I’ll disagree and say that, i don’t think the President has that power," Lawyer Oppong stressed.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked the police to investigate President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi, for a potential crime of defrauding by false pretence.
A Deputy Chief of Staff, Samuel Abu Jinapor, confirmed this to presidential correspondents in the Jubilee House.
Menawhile, Kwesi Nyantakyi who was out of Ghana at the time his arrest order was issued, has landed and surrendered himself to the police on May 23, 2018.
