- Jessica Opare-Saforo says most people in Ghana do not deserve the celebrity tag
- According to her, a true celebrity can’t step out on the street without being mobbed by fans
Programmes Manager at Citi FM, Jessica Opare-Saforo, believes very few people in Ghana deserve to be tagged as celebrities.
According to her, to be described as a celebrity goes beyond being known or simply excelling in the showbiz industry.
She, therefore, pointed to dancehall sensation Shatta Wale as one of the very few showbiz personalities in the country that can lay claim to the celebrity tag.
The radio presenter believes celebrities must be endearing to a large fan base and should have some clout whenever they step out.
In her view, Shatta Wale ticks all those brackets and that makes the “Gringo” singer a ‘true celebrity’.
“There are very few celebrities in Ghana. A true celebrity can’t step out on the street without being mobbed by fans. And in Ghana one person we can call ‘celebrity’ is Shatta Wale. Let him step out and see how many people will follow him. That is a celebrity,” Jessica told Accra-based Citi FM.
She further noted that the fact that someone has the opportunity to speak on radio or TV does not make him or her a celebrity.
According to her, ascribing celebrity statuses must follow the right concept of what the word means.
