Police chase key suspect in Bogoso robbery to death; arrest one other

- Another suspect in the Bogoso robbery has died

- The suspect, said to be the leader of the gang died through an accident after a hot chase from the police

One of the key suspects in the Bogoso robbery in the Western Region that led to the murder of police Lance Corporal Nicholas Duku was on Thursday died after a hot chase from the police.

Identified as Nathaniel Ibu, a Nigerian, he is said to have led the gang from Accra to Bogoso to rob and kill the Lance Corporal who was on guard duties.

According to a police statement sighted by YEN.com.gh, they got a tip-off at about 10am on Thursday, that some of the armed robbers who took part in the Bogoso robbery were planning to embark on another robbery at East Legon moved to the scene.

Undercover personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate monitored and arrested suspect Kojo Amponsah, 46, at Ablekuma Olebu.

Amponsah confessed to taking part in the Bogoso robbery and led the officers to Achimota where his other accomplices were.

At Achimota bus terminal one of the accomplices on seeing the team sped off towards the motorway facing oncoming vehicles whilst firing back at the police.

The police personnel pursued him and returned fired.

Upon reaching the Okponglo traffic light, the suspect's vehicle collided with a Range Rover vehicle leading him to stop and was subsequently apprehended.

The suspect, the police statement added, "died whilst being rushed to the Police hospital Police for treatment. One foreign pistol with forty rounds of ammunition retrieved from his vehicle."

Ibu is the second suspect in the Bogoso robbery case to have died after his accomplice, Frederick Mensah alias Nana 1 was gunned down by police earlier in May.

The gang comprising nine suspects who allegedly played various roles in the stealing of GHC900,000 belonging to an Indian-owned company, Plat and Plume Gold Refinery Company Ltd.

It was in the process that a police officer, Duku Nicholas, detailed to the company was shot in the back several times while he was escaping.
