How to check JHS placement 2018

The Ghana education system provides that basic education is provided in four levels; the primary education which runs for 6 years, junior high school for 3 years, senior high school at 4 years and the tertiary education for 4 years. This then makes this system be fondly referred to as the 6-3-4-4 system although there are 2 years for kindergarten schooling. The kindergarten school kids are introduced to learning through teaching aid and taught how to read and write. The primary education covers the English language, and instills numerical, literacy and creative arts skills. The junior high school which is my main focus here student learn Mathematics, Social Studies, English, Integrated Sciences, Agriculture and a Ghanaian language. In addition to these they should go through the communication, vocational, technical and information subjects following which they sit for the examination awaiting the JHS placement.

The JHS placement happens after the third year students of junior high school sit for their main examination which is done around the month of June facilitated by the Ministry of Education although the placement is done by the Ghana Education Service board. Students who pass well or qualify for tertiary education are then placed in their respective tertiary schools through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) which does the JHS results placement. The students then get to use the JHS school placement checker to know the institution they are supposed to join to further their education.

As mentioned above, the Ghana Education Service uses the CSSPS system to place the qualified Basic Education Certificate Examination candidates into technical institutes, vocational institutes and senior high school. Of course this is done subject to the individual student performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

This computerized automated system has an input code that selects the schools for students and ensures each student has a placement in the Senior High School, Tertiary Institution or Vocational Training Centre. This is one of the services the government of Ghana has invested and has come of age in the quality service delivery. This eliminates bias that conventionally used to be there when placement was done manually by human personnel.

In fact this modern system generates the JHS placement based on a cumulative continuous assessment test done by the school which is then submitted to the Ghana Education Services before the BECE exams are done. The complied list is then released a month after the students sit for their exams and placement is done immediately after. The JHS results placement for each student are then shared online for the students to check their selected schools. It is expected the student print out the placement letter and send the copy to the allocated school. To do this one must access the online placement form.

However, there are some rare cases where the CSSPS system may fail to give you the needed result even after inputting the correct index number, card serial number and the pin. The reason may be varied but nonetheless there is still something one can do to try getting the JHS result placement. There are re-entry forms and application procedure to follow

It mostly happen when the number of qualified students selected for a certain school supersede the school student capacity and hence the students with lower marks although have qualified for placement there miss out. The re-entry forms help those who have missed out on JHS school placement. They are given a second chance to try out on the second placement trial although this is done at a small fee. The forms need to be filled up for the student to be eligible for the second placement exercise. This exercise is a mandatory and failure to fill these forms automatically disqualifies the student from JHS placement.

Here is how to go about this second JHS placement procedure:

  • Get to www.myjhsresults.net
  • This gets you to the CSSPS computerized system that does the student placement.
  • Log in to this portal using your index number and the PIN code.

Ordinarily, I knew this would be an obvious question. Now that we know the school we have been allocated what is the next thing that we should do. Well, there are a few things to be done before you join your next school or institution. We all understand enrolling in a learning institution is a process and this is no exemption.

Ideally, one needs to get to my JHS placement form online, as I had mentioned earlier on. The form are assessed after you get to the official cssps placement site and sign up using your index number, serial cars number and the pin code. The my JHS placement form needs to be downloaded and printed out. As a student, you are then expected to send a copy to your school of selection including the invitation letter. The school will then confirm to your upon receipt of the same and guide on the enrollment procedure including the opening dates, program and learning schedule.

The government of Ghana has surely come a long way in restructuring the education in their vision to offer quality education to all and ensure all students needs get to be addressed to satisfaction. This is one education system that is not only aimed at instilling knowledge and information but also in nurturing talents and abilities and mould kids into being responsible citizens later on in their life. Is this not an achievement/ or are we not on the right track?

The CSSPS is surely one of these successes. It has helped handle the issue of school placement. Students get to be allocated their school of choice so long as their BECE performance allows them to unless of course the school in question is overcrowded or has reached its maximum capacity. This eliminates the many complaint that conventionally used to be there of why a certain student was not placed in a certain school yet they had performed very well. Student from marginalized areas or disadvantaged families often fell victims of these.

The selection bias to be really honest has been completely scrapped off. The distinction the government made ensuring exams and placement are done by different and independent bodies. The Basic Education Certificate Examination handles the issues of exams according to the West African Education Council while the WAEC JHS school placement is done by the Ghana Education Service board. These are independent entities yet work harmoniously for the good of the students. The boon to this is that the student get not only to be assessed based on their final examination performance which could be dictated by thing beyond their control. The continuous test done at the school level are complied together then sent to the organization before the students sit for their junior high school exams.

These are some of the good things that have redefined how education and programs are offered. The public education system has been overly criticized over the years with many parents placing preference to the private sector with reasons of quality of education, structures among other things. However, the evolution that has taken place in the recent past has redefined how things are done and the citizens and students are appreciative of the same. The public school can now compete with the private schools and even outdo each other in one thing or the other.

Ghana education system

Elementary education in Ghana has had it fair share of challenges. May arguments have been put forward that the education system is inefficient and focuses mostly on the academic assessment at the expense of other thing that should be looked into in the life of a student. For this reason sometime back the private schools were a booming business in Ghana as parents and guardian sought other avenues to offer quality education far away from the public schools that were thought to be ineffective and crowded and hence nothing good could come out of them.

As this pressure mounted, the government of Ghana got concerned on the ways to put to an end this migration and the low rating in public schools. Educationist and research then developed a workable plan which would make the status of education in the public sector go up. First there was the introduction of free education to ensure all kids got the basic education without dropping out with reasons of school fees.

The West African Education Council put up measures that if implemented would raise the quality of education and this was to be a mandatory thing for the schools in Ghana. The Ministry of education then made a clear distinction between who to play which role and who to be responsible for the next. This brought about varied student assessment, registration and later the Computerized School Selection and Placement System to go the JHS placement exercises.

Registration for the Basic Education Certificate Examination

Before even we talk of the JHS Placement, well we must have a talk about the registration for the examination because this is where it all begins. All schools are required to register all their third year student in the junior high school who are due to sit for the Basic Education Certificate Examination. If the school fails to register its student this means that the examination council will not allow then to sit for the final exams. They will have to sit during the next period.

The education regulation provides that the registration process be open for two months every year to allow schools have ample time to register their students. The two months run from the Month of October all the way through November when it closes until the next academic registration timeframes. This enables the examination body, the West Africa Education Council and the Basic Education Certificate Examination bodies to prepare the needed logistics for use during the exam time.

The registration requires the student the school with;

An uploaded statement of entries with the examination council – The Ghanaian government does not limit the number of attempts a student can make in the BECE but the council needs to know the number of times you have sat for the exams. First time candidates get to do the exams with no additional charges but subsequent entries requires one to pay a small charge and this is the reason why this information is important.

The candidates’ choice of schools with the examination council – Again each student has their schools of choices where they desire to be enrolled at should they reach the cut off mark. This guide on the JHS school placement and by a large extent determines the school a student is allocated with.

Submit the internal exams results to the council offices – Again this new education system makes a continuous assessment of the student performance. The scores at the score internal cats should be submitted to the council office long before they sit for the exams. This is to be submitted in a compact disk where this data is safely stored for future reference.

How are the BECE exams administered?

Well, by now we crystal clear understand that the BECE has to be done before the JHS placement is done. So how exactly are the exams done? Ideally the exams are done in the month of June to students who are eligible to sit for the exam. The qualification measure here being in the third year of the junior high school and register by the concerned examination body.

The examinations for all subjects have both the multiple choices answers and question with no choices testing on the intellect ability of the kind to make memory of what they learnt in class and even in practical work. The students are expected to answer soberly to the question. A grading system will them apply. It has grading points in the range of 1 to 9. 9 is the lowest grade on the grid while 1 is the highest grade point. This grading system is applied even in the continuous assessment tests done during session learning including the internal exams.

The exams are then marked and result put through the CSSPS system for JHS school placement. Those students who have passed the exams exemplary well are given a Basic Education Certificate Examination honorary certificate. However, they are only available for collection a month after the results are announced. Again this is only issued one, so if you happen to lose a copy of this then none other copy can be issued to you later. Nonetheless, it still is a good way to acknowledge those who have done well in exams. The government since 2017 has been paying 705 of the exam registration cost a relief to the parents and guardians.

Clearly, the placement for JHS made things efficient and the JHS placement checker just tops the icing to the cake. This is one of the best programs the Ghanaian government has enacted so far in the education sector. It has significantly reduced operational costs, improved service delivery and shortened the results placement duration before the news are announced.
