About the super star - journey of the making of a star

Well, Grace Kaki Awo Ocansey, better known as Kaakie was born on 28th March 1991. She is a Ghanaian reggae artist with outstanding vocals and appealing hits hence earned the name ‘dancehall queen’. She grew up a music lover and her journey into music industry began way when she was still young in elementary school. Even though her course at the university was nothing close to music, her talent could still not be hidden.

Her journey into the showbiz limelight began when she was still at the university. It was at the university that an opportunity to feature in one of the popular reality show, ‘Stars of the Future’ knocked on her door.

She participated in this singing competition that ran for a couple weeks in the Ghanaian local channels. The competition was stiff, and even though she did not manage to take home the trophy, she was still among the top ten participants- after a number of them got evicted. Particularly, she managed to fall in the fifth place. This was not over for her as she, later on, met JMJ Baby where eventually her passion blossomed into a career.

JMJ Baby or rather Joshua Raphaelson is not just an ordinary sound engineer. He is one of the most respected Ghanaian sound producers who nurture potential and upcoming artists into reputable singers. Judging from the success of Kaakie, well we can simply acknowledge that his quality of work speaks for itself. Thanks to him, she got signed to his record label, Xtra Large Music, where her legend story began.

However, after six years of being with the record label that gave her the breakthrough, she ultimately parted ways with Xtra Large Music last years, in search of greener pasture. Unlike many Ghanaian artists who leave such labels without even saying goodbye, she left on a good note and still respects the management, despite disagreements on certain clauses of the contract.

Album release

She finally released an album on 27th December 2006- Kaakitup. It contains twenty songs and features a number of well-established artists such as Stonebwoy, Samini, Guru, Wutah Kobby and Linguakat. It’s her first album and was released on Xtra Large Music Label.
