West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini will not be heading to Russia for the 2018 Fifa World Cup after he sustained a serious knee injury during the Le Albaresta training session today.
According to a Daily Mail report, citing Argentina FA official Twitter page confirmed that the Hammers’ player ruptured his cruciate knee ligament during Friday’s session.
The severity of the injury suggests that the Argentine will miss the opening weeks of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign.
"Manuel Lanzini suffered, in today's morning training, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee,” the tweet from the Argentine national team read in part.
Interestingly, Lanzini’s injury emerged only a few hours after he was pictured on Instagram with the rest of the La Albiceleste squad members by Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi.
The Premier League player was in positive mood during the picture session inside an eatery during a timeout from preparations for the coming Mundial.
Painfully, Lanzini is now expected to head back to London for more analysis and treatment while the other head to Russia.
At press time, Argentina Federation as yet to confirm who will step in to replace the West Ham ace.
Interestingly, the report further revealed that Lanzini's invitation by manager Jorge Sampaoli at the first instance, did not go down well with some Argentine fans who believed that Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi, who netted 29 goals in Serie A last campaign with was a better choice that Lanzini who could only manage five strikes for the Hammers.
Sampaoli and his technical crew will now quickly decided the player they will replace Lanzini in the coming days.

The 25-year-old Icardi has been left out despite proving to be among world’s top goals scorer over the past Serie A campaigns’ with Inter Milan.
