- A joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico wins the right to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup
- The combined bid beat Morocco by a margin of 69 votes to win the hosting right
The United States of America (USA) will host the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico after winning the hosting bid over Morocco.
The trio of nations faced strong competition from the North African nation, whose bidding hope was spearheaded by former Senegalese international El Hadji Doiuf.
However, Morocco could not garner as many votes from the FIFA member countries to match that of USA, Canada and Mexico who presented a joint bid.
Morocco won just 65 of the total votes, accounting for 33% whiles the USA, Canada and Mexico polled 67% to win the hosting bid of the 2026 World Cup.
"Thank you so, so much for this incredible honour. Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege,” US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said after the voting.
"We are all united in football, the beautiful game transcends borders and cultures. Football today is the only victor."
Morocco’s failure means South Africa remains the only nation from Africa to have ever hosted the FIFA World Cup, having hosted the tournament in 2010.
