Spain has appointed Fernando Hierro as the country’s new head coach following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui.
Hierro was announced as the new Spain coach just hours after the dismissal of his predecessor.
The former Real Madrid captain will take charge of the Spanish national team for the duration of the 2018 World Cup.
Spain decided to relieve Lopetegui of his post after the veteran manager was announced as Real Madrid manager three days to the start of the World Cup.
However, the former youth coach has been swiftly replaced by Hierro, who until his appointment served as Sporting Director for Spain.
Hierro was a key figure during his playing days with Real Madrid. The 50-yer-old also featured 89 times for La Roja, scoring 29 times in the process.
His has never coached a national team, but has had short managerial spells with Bolton Wanderers, Real Valladolid and once served as assistant manager at Real Madrid.
The former Spain international is expected to lead the national team to success in Russia.
