Salah-less Egypt suffer stoppage time heartbreak as Jose Gimenez fires Uruguay to victory

Egypt suffered a stoppage time heartbreak on Friday, June 15 during the second match of the 2018 World Cup played at the Ekaterinburg Arena in Yekaterinburg.

Jose Gimenez fired Uruguay to victory, with his 89th minute goal sealing all the three points for Oscar Tabarez's men.

The Atletico Madrid star headed home from Sanchez' brilliant free-kick from seven yards to gift his nation all the three points.

The tough tie saw Uruguay deadly strike duo of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani fire blanks in the opening minutes, with the two sides settling for a goalless draw in the first half.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Egypt shot-stopper Mohamed El Shenawi stood out for the Pharaoh's who were sluggish for the better part of the match.

The 29-year old managed to keep Uruguay's attact at bay, even as Cavani and Suarez attempted unsuccessfully to break Egypt's solid defense countless times.

Egypt star forward Mo Salah did not feature during the tie despite being declared fit by head coach Hector Cuper who went on to name the Liverpool ace in the final squad to face Uruguay.

Following their crucial win, Uruguay are second in Group A, with hosts Russia topping the group that includes Saudi Arabia who they demolished 5-0 in the tournament's opening match.

The Pharaohs will be looking to make amends in their subsequent matches against Russia and Saudi Arabia.
