- The footballing world was bewildered by the performance of some teams at the ongoing tournament so far
- This has led many to re-think and suggest that the Russia 2018 World Cup might just give the world a new or "outsider" winner
The 2018 World Cup in Russia has so far lived up to expectation, expect for a few surprises that have sprung up in terms of results.
This year’s tournament is turning out to be one where the big football nations are falling to the so-called minnows.
So far most of the pre-tournament favourites have not been able to live up to the hype after the opening round of games.
However, there are a couple of B-list and C-list teams that are in with a chance of surprisingly winning the trophy.
Below are the top five “outsiders” who are most likely to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia:
The Croatia national team may be also-rans in the 2018 World Cup, but their amazing start means they stand a good chance of going home with the trophy.
The Croats easily dispatched off Nigeria in their opening game, thanks to an own goal and another from Luca Modric.
The Europeans also boast a goof squad capable of challenging any other side in the tournament. The Real Madrid star, together with Ivan Rakitic, Mario Manzukic, Kovacic and Ivan Perisic all all players that would easily walk into any top side.
Portugal may not have arrived in Russia with the best squad, but when you have Cristriano Ronaldo on your side then anything is possible.
The 33-year-old was inspirational form as the Portuguese held favourites Spain to a 1-1 draw in their opening game of the tournament.
Ronaldo netted a sensational hat-trick and it is obvious why many have tipped the Selecao as one of the “outsiders” who could win the World Cup.
England have always seemed to disappoint when the stakes are high. However, expectations have been very modest in this year’s World Cup.
The Three Lions opted to take a very youthful team to Russia and have therefore been rated outside the favourites for the tournament.’
However, that could play to their advantage as this group of hungry players could finally win something for their country. They also have a cool group which they can easily navigate their way through.
Perhaps the most star-studded side in the 2018 World Cup, Belgium’s golden generation have another chance to try to win something.
The Red Devils exited at the quarterfinal stage in the 2014 World Cup, however, they looked primed to go a step further and even win the tournament this time round.
With Eden Hazard, Kevin De Brunye and Romelu Lukaku all coming on the back of impressive seasons, nothing should stop Belgium from going all the way.
Before the 2018 World Cup started, Mexico were not even being considered as outsiders. However, after their impressive win over Germany, most people have started taking them serious.
The Mexicans beat the defending champions 1-0 in their opening game, but the manner in which they played was even more eye-catching.
If they can keep up with such performances when there is no reason why they can’t reach the final and even win the World Cup.
