The whole of Accra was not flooded - Accra mayor insists

- The Accra mayor says not all of Accra was flooded in the June 18 flooding

- Heavy rains have flooded most parts of Accra with major roads blocked

- This development follows an earlier assurance by the Accra Mayor that Accra will never be flooded

Barely 24 hours after the heavy rains in the capital, the Accra mayor, Mohammed Adjei Sowah believes the media lied to Ghanaians on this development. According to the mayor, the only area that got flooded was the Adabraka suburb of Accra.

There are credible reports that areas such as Ashongman, Dome, Klagon, Madina and the Mallam junction area are heavily flooded by the Monday downpour.

“They are rather interested in protecting their belongings rather than their own lives. I visited other areas as well…it was only the Adabraka area that got flooded. Some people are living in low land areas and that is why they are mostly affected by the floods. We are doing our best to desilt the drains. We are looking at having storm drains at some areas…Adabraka Sahara is one of such areas,” he said.

The hour-long rain has blocked roads, inundated homes and even left large stretches of walkways flooded at knee-level.

So far, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has deployed personnel across the country to ensure full safety of victims as the fire service is also in high alert against any disaster.

Social media users have been sharing pictures on how severe the floods has been and you can see how severe it has been.

This situation contradicts what the mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, promised residents of Accra some months ago. The confident mayor said Accra will not experience any floods during the rainy season.

According to the mayor, all chocked gutters in the capital have been desilted stating that his conviction comes from recent downpours which resulted in no floods.

Floods in Accra continues to be a serious issue to the government. Ghanaians felt the utmost effect of flooding on June 3rd after days of heavy downpour which lasted for hours. Unfortunately, the flooding coincided with the gas explosion at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra which saw the deaths of several victims.
