This year's edition of the 2018 FIFA World Cup officially commenced on Thursday, June 14 in Russia.

Thus far, the tournament has gifted football fans around the world with some of the most memorable recollections, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting a magical hat-trick to secure Portugal a vital point against Spain and Lionel Messi missing a penalty against Iceland.

However, ahead of the tourney's conclusion in mid-July, TUKO.co.ke gives you a sneak peek of big and top football names who could be playing in their last World Cup ever.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

The Real Madrid forward and Portugal captain is one of the biggest football stars who could possibly retire from international duty.

He will be 37-years old during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

2. Lionel Messi

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner brought his international duty to a brief halt in 2016. At the time, the Barcelona skipper admitted that he did not think through his retirement announcement.

However, the 30-year old has since made it clear that he will formally retire from international football if his national side, Argentina, fail to win 2018 World Cup in Russia.

3. Angel Di Maria

The Argentine winger could also be playing in their last World Cup tournament.

The PSG star made his debut with the Argentina national team in 2008 and has since earned over 90 caps, scoring the goal that won the country gold at the 2008 Olympics.

He has also featured for his nation in three Copa América tournaments, reaching the final of the 2014 World Cup.

4. Sergio Ramos

The Real Madrid defender will be aged 36 when it is time for Spain to travel to Qatar in 2022.

The Spanish captain emerged through Sevilla's youth academy, before moving to Madrid in the summer of 2005.

He has represented the Spanish national team in three World Cups and three European Championships, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro in 2008 and 2012.

5. Andres Iniesta

Iniesta, 34, would also possibly not feature for Spain in 2022 should his nation qualify for the next edition of the World Cup.

The midfielder recently quit his boy-hood club, Barcelona, before signing with Japanese Club, Vissel Kobe.

Iniesta featured for Spain at the Under-16, Under-19 and Under-21 levels before making his international debut in 2006, helping them win Euro 2008.

6. Hugo Lloris

The Totttenham Hotspurs captain is another top footballer who may retire after the 2018 World Cup.

The French shot-stopper will be hoping to capatin France in 2022 should the European nation qualify for the mundial.

Lloris, 31, represented his nation at under-18, under-19, and under-21 level, before making his debut for the senior team in November 2008 in a friendly against Uruguay.
