- Russia entered the tournament as the lowest-ranked nation and in dismal form
- But after their first two games, they have the best start of any host side in World Cup history
Russia has made the best start ever among all the host nations in the history of World Cup. Having been paired in group A with Uruguay, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the Russians have so far surprised many.
A 5-0 opening day victory over Saudi Arabia set the tone for what has so far been a perfect tournament for the hosts.
Prior to the start of the World Cup, Russia had not won any of their last seven games but they seem to have found form at the right time.
Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Egypt was historic for Russia, as they entered the history books as the host nation to have made the best start ever to a World Cup.
In two games, the hosts have six points and a positive goal difference of seven, having conceded just once so far.
The closest any nation has come to such a record was Italy in 1934, who also won their opening two games.
And although the Azzuri also scored eight goals, they ended up conceding twice, leaving their goal difference at +6.
Currently, Russia’s goal difference of +7 is superior. With a tougher clash against Uruguay to come in their final group game, it remains to be seen if Russia can extent this record.
