- Lionel Messi has received the backing of his mother, Celia Messi, after series of negative attacks after his penalty miss
- Followers of the game believe the Argentina’s captain is still miles away from meeting the records set by Diego Maradona.
- But his wife, Roccuzzo also took to the social media to send a morale-boosting message which has already gathered over 1.3 million likes
Argentina captain, Lionel Messi has received the backing of his mother, Celia Messi, who is unhappy following series of negative attacks on the Barcelona playmaker after his penalty miss in the Albestie opening World Cup game against Iceland.
Reacting on the sad development, Messi’s mum hinted that it is painful when his son’s loyalty to his country is under scrutiny, even as she was quick to deny the allegation that Messi does not feel the same passion when he plays for the Albestie.
“We suffer the criticism Leo receives when they say he doesn’t feel proud when he puts on the Argentinian shirt or that he plays for his country out of obligation.
“It’s not true. If you saw him, like we’ve seen him suffer and cry!
“It hurts you to hear things like that,” Celia Messi was quoted as saying on Argentina TV, by the UK Sun, days after the Barcelona legend missed from the spot to deny the South Americans a 2-1 win over Iceland.
Reacting further from her native home in Rosario, where Messi tied the knot with his childhood lover, Antonela Rocuzzo last year, she stressed: “From here all his family are supporting him.
“I would give everything for this to be his World Cup. Fortunately people love him and transmit that to him and he values that a lot.
“I think he’s optimistic and his dream is to win a World Cup. It’s what he wants the most. He looks calm to me. I told him to do what he knows best, to enjoy himself and I’ve told him all his family are supporting him.”

However, despite Messi’s intimidating credentials, lovers of the round-leather game believe the Argentina’s captain is still miles away from meeting the records set by Albestie all-time idol Diego Maradona.
It is on record that Messi left his country as a youngster and never participated in professional football in his native country.
Previously, he threatened he wanted to do away with international football in June 2016 after Albestie’s Copa America final loss to Chile, but later made a U-turn claiming it was a “heat-of-the-moment” decision.
“I am experiencing this period with the national team in a different way. I am more relaxed. When they criticise me, I experience it differently,” Messi stressed in 2017.

On the other hand, Roccuzzo also took to the social media to send a morale-boosting message on her Instagram account and it was well received after gathering over 1.3 million likes in under 12 hours.
Roccuzzo equally posted a photo of herself alongside a smiling Messi accompanied by their three sons, Thiago, 5, Mateo, 2, and Ciro, 3 months.
She added the following captioned: "Always together and with you more than ever."
Interestingly, an Instagram user was touched by the message, replied: "Beautiful family, don't listen to the nonsense they are saying! I back Messi, for me they are the Royal Family of Argentina!"
Similarly, 'pedropablo2906.ppra' added: "Whether he wins or not he is still the best player in the history of football."
However, the Barcelona playmaker has been a subject of ridicule in various online platform after his penalty miss.
A social user uploaded a photo of Messi being held down by the Iceland players.
While another user opted to use a cartoon of Messi playing better for Nou Camp outfit than Argentina.
"Obviously it hurts me to have missed the penalty. They would have opened a little more and we could have found more spaces.
“I feel responsible for not having been able to take the three points. I have no doubt that a goal from the penalty kick would have changed everything.
“We have the bitterness of not being able to take the three points that we deserved. To start with winning is always important, now we have to think about Croatia. We will try to pass this quickly,” submitted the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously had reported that Messi alongside Sergio Aguero and Marcos Rojo arrived the Albestie’s training session aboard a golf cart ahead of Thursday’s Group D encounter between Argentina and Croatia.
On the other hand, their teammates took a walk to the training venue at Argentina’s Moscow base.
