- Jerome Boateng has been criticized for celebrating Senegal's win over Poland
- German fans have questioned Jerome's loyalty
Germany international Jerome Boateng was on the receiving end of criticisms after celebrating Senegal’s opening World Cup win.
The Lions of Teranga became the first African nation to win a game at the ongoing tournament in Russia after defeating Poland on Tuesday.
An own goal and another strike from Mbaye Niang were enough to hand the Africans a 2-1 win over Poland in Group H.
Following Senegal’s triumph, Jerome Boateng took to Twitter to rejoice, insisting he is “so happy”.
“So happy for Senegal, Alex,” the Bayern defender wrote, accompanied by a love emoji.
However, most Germany and Bayern fans were not amused by his post due to the country’s close ties with Poland and Robert Lewandowski’s presence there.
The former Manchester City centre-back was subsequently criticized for choosing to celebrate the win of an African side against that of his teammate.
Boateng was forced to post another comment to explain what accounted for his support for Senegal instead of Poland.
According to him, his best friend has Senegal roots and that was the basis for him rejoicing in the African country’s win.
He further stated that the post had nothing to do with Lewandowski, adding the he wishes the Poland captain well.
“My best friend Alex has Senegal roots and I was often there with him, so that‘s why I was cheering for them Nothing to do with Lewy - of course I wish him all the best,” Boateng clarified.
