AMA drops dangerous areas in Accra during heavy downpours

- The AMA as shared a list of flood-prone areas in Accra

- The June 18 floods left homes inundated with properties destroyed

- A middle-aged man was found dead around Trassaco Estate after the June 18 downpour

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has released the names of flood-prone areas in Ghana today.

Following reports of deaths and missing persons since the June 18 floods, he has been a full release of the various residences in Accra that are bound to face issues of severe flooding.

These are the 14 flood-prone areas in Accra you must be wary of:

1. Laterbiokorshie

2. Osu

3. Bubuashie

4. South Odorkor

5. Mpoase

6. Korle-Bu

7. Arena

8. Legon

9. Dansoman

10. Mataheko

11. North Kaneshie

One of the unfortunate deaths which occurred includes that of a doctor at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital who died after getting trapped in her vehicle. Dr. Hayfron was discovered dead in the Kpeshie Lagoon which is closer to the sea in Teshie.

This troubling story follows the death of a middle-aged man spotted near the Trassaco Estate Junction at Adjiringanor in Accra after the heavy downpour on June 18.

Also, a mother with three kids died at Ashaiman in a flooded gutter with her 2-year-old baby boy strapped at her back.

The hour-long rain has blocked roads, inundated homes and even left large stretches of walkways flooded at knee-level.

So far, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has deployed personnel across the country to ensure full safety of victims as the fire service is also in high alert against any disaster.

Social media users have been sharing pictures on how severe the floods has been and you can see how severe it has been.

This situation contradicts what the mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, promised residents of Accra some months ago. The confident mayor said Accra will not experience any floods during the rainy season. According to the mayor, all chocked gutters in the capital have been desilted stating that his conviction comes from recent downpours which resulted in no floods.

Floods in Accra continues to be a serious issue to the government. Ghanaians felt the utmost effect of flooding on June 3rd after days of heavy downpour which lasted for hours. Unfortunately, the flooding coincided with the gas explosion at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra which saw the deaths of several victims.
