Ghana Regional Maritime University

The Ghana Regional Maritime University was known before as the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA), but it was renamed. The formal inauguration of the R.M.A. took place on May 26th, 1983, and the following countries were its main founding members in Ghana: Republics of Cameroon, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. The main objective of founding the RMU Ghana was to promote the regional cooperation between African countries when it comes to the maritime industry in general and to also focus on the training and the teaching of the African youth so that they can grow up capable of achieving developments and innovations in the industry. Regional Maritime University main objectives and goals

There are five main and principal objectives of the Regional Maritime University. The first one is To develop an advanced and a liberal program of maritime education and training in order to match the modern technological innovations that are associated with different shipboard operations and the rising fishing industry in Africa, while its second objective is mainly to prepare sea-going officers for assuming higher responsibilities on fishing vessels and merchant ships. The third objective is to provide the training facilities with a view to the promotion of the managerial, administrative, operational and technical skills of ports and shore-based shipping personnel. The fourth objective is to work on promoting maritime co-operation and participation between all the member states of the university so that they can come up all together with innovative ideas and practices that may improve the whole educational process and the training of the responsible maritime officers, and the fifth objective is to perform all the other functions that are incidental to the university’s objects and goals.

Entry route for mature students (all programs)

  • Applicants have to be at least 25 years old, and they would have to present a proof of their age with a birth certificate or any other legitimate document that can be taken as a proof of the date of birth. Such document needs to be at least 5 years old at the time of the application.
  • Applicants also have to pass the mature students’ entrance examinations that are conducted by the university in (English language, mathematics, and the aptitude test).
  • Some applicants must have a scientific background depending on the program they are going to apply to.

Note: the mature entrance examinations for the RMU intake are usually held in August.

Undergraduate Bachelor of Science programs (4 years)

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Electronic engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

There are mainly three options for the main admission requirements in order to apply to the above-mentioned programs.

  1. WASSCE, SSSCE, or NECO holders: The credits of the applicants have to be (A1-C6/ A-D) in the three 3 main subjects: Mathematics, English, and Social Studies/Integrated Science plus and (A1-C6/A-D) in any of the three other elective subjects that must include elective mathematics and physics with a score of not more than 36 on the WASSCE scale or not more than 24 on the SSSCE or NECO scales.
  2. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Holders: all applicants have to have credits in at least five (5) G.C.E ‘O’ level subjects that include mathematics and English language in addition to at least three advanced level passes in other relevant subjects that include mathematics.
  3. HND Holders: HND degree holders in electrical/electronic engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering with a minimum of 2nd Class lower division from recognized tertiary Institutions. Applicants must have at least two (2) years post-qualification working experience.

Other possible qualifications:

  • International Baccalaureate degree (IB) with a minimum score of 10 out of 20 in each of the main relevant subjects.
  • Combined Cambridge and IGCSE – GCE ‘A’ and ‘O’ levels holders have to obtain at least three relevant subjects at the Cambridge ‘A’ levels plus five (5) passes in other subjects that have to include mathematics and English at the Cambridge ‘O’ level.
  • American Grades 12, the final grade point has to be at least 3.0.
  • City & Guilds technician part three and advanced technician diploma, etc. in some main relevant subjects that are equivalent to GCE or the SSSCE/WASSCE can be considered.

Below are the admission requirements options of the following programs:

Bachelor of Science in Ports and Shipping Administration (regular/weekend)

Bachelor of Science in Logistics Management

1. WASSCE, SSSCE, or NECO holders: The credits of the applicants have to be (A1-C6/ A-D) in the three 3 main subjects: Mathematics, English, and Social Studies/Integrated Science plus and (A1-C6/A-D) in any of the three other elective subjects with a score of 36 on the main WASSCE scale or about 24 on the SSSCE or NECO scales.

2. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Holders: all applicants have to have credits in at least five (5) G.C.E ‘O’ level subjects that include mathematics and English language in addition to at least three advanced level passes in other relevant subjects.

3. Advanced Business Certificate Examination (ABCE) certificate Holders: Applicants have to have a full diploma certificate in ABCE. Besides, applicants have to have credit passes in five (5) subjects that include mathematics, English language, or integrated science or social studies in the main general business certificate examination GBCE, SSSCE, WASSCE, or NECO. Also, ABCE candidates may have the option to be considered for admission at level 200 of a main degree program.

4. HND Holders: HND holders in Business related programs with a minimum of 2nd class lower division from recognized tertiary institutions may be admitted to level 300, while HND in other programs will be admitted into level 200. Applicants must have at least two (2) years post-qualification working experience.

Other possible qualifications:

  • International Baccalaureate degree (IB) with a minimum score of 10 out of 20 in each of the main relevant subjects.
  • Combined Cambridge and IGCSE – GCE ‘A’ and ‘O’ levels holders have to obtain at least three relevant subjects at the Cambridge ‘A’ levels plus five (5) passes in other subjects that have to include mathematics and English at the Cambridge ‘O’ level.
  • American Grades 12, the final grade point has to be at least 3.0

Bachelor of Science in Logistics Management (with and without one year of studying in China)

The above program is run by two universities; the Regional Maritime University and Shanghai Maritime University in China. The first, second and fourth years will be held at the Regional Maritime University, and the third year will be held at Shanghai Maritime University in China. Never the less, traveling to China for studying is not certain, as the students have to obtain Chinese entry visa. The interested candidates have to have their own financial means in order to pay for a ticket from China to Ghana and also for their living expenses during their time in China. The applicants must also not be more than 30 years at the start of the program. Applicants can also choose to get their degree in Ghana without having to travel to China.

Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science

This program is mainly for students who are willing to pursue a career as ship captains. Below are the main admission requirements.

  • WASSCE, SSSCE, or NECO holders: The credits of the applicants have to be (A1-C6/ A-D) in the three 3 main subjects: Mathematics, English, and Integrated Science plus and (A1-C6/A-D) in any of the three other elective subjects that have to include physics and elective mathematics with a score of not less than 36 on the main WASSCE scale or not less than 24 on the SSSCE or NECO scales.
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Holders: all applicants have to have credits in at least five (5) G.C.E ‘O’ level subjects that include mathematics and English language in addition to at least three advanced level passes in other relevant subjects that include mathematics.

Other possible qualifications:

  • International Baccalaureate degree (IB) with a minimum score of 10 out of 20 in each of the main relevant subjects.
  • Combined Cambridge and IGCSE – GCE ‘A’ and ‘O’ levels holders have to obtain at least three relevant subjects at the Cambridge ‘A’ levels plus five (5) passes in other subjects that have to include mathematics and English at the Cambridge ‘O’ level.
  • American Grades 12, the final grade point has to be at least 3.0.
  • City & Guilds technician part three and advanced technician diploma, etc. in some main relevant subjects that are equivalent to GCE or the SSSCE/WASSCE can be considered.

Postgraduate MSc. Programs

MSc. Bio-Processing Engineering

Applicants must have a first degree in Engineering with at least second class lower division from a recognized university. Applicants with a B.Sc. in the physical sciences will be considered if they have at least one (1) year of relevant work experience.

The following documents need to be submitted by the applicants:

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae
  • A thesis proposal of not more than 500 words
  • Three (3) referee’s reports

MSc. Environmental Engineering

Applicants must have a good first degree in engineering with at least second class lower division from a recognized University. Applicants with a B.Sc. in the physical sciences will be considered if they have at least one (1) year of relevant work experience.

The following documents need to be submitted by the applicants:

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae
  • A thesis proposal of not more than 500 words
  • Three (3) referee’s reports

MA in Ports and Shipping Administration (with the University of Ghana)

There are two different options for admission requirements to apply for a master’s degree in Ports and Shipping Administration.

  1. A good first degree with at least a minimum of 2nd lower division in any of the following fields: Social Sciences, Business Administration, Maritime Discipline, or other related disciplines from a recognized university. Students also need to provide proof of working for at least 2 years in Logistics or Maritime related organization.
  2. Providing a highest-grade certificate of competency for unrestricted service as a Master Mariner or a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy.

The following documents need to be submitted by the applicants:

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae
  • A thesis proposal of not more than 500 words
  • Three (3) referee’s reports

Diploma programs

Diploma in electrical/electronic engineering (regular/weekend)

There are two main options for applying for the above-mentioned diploma:

  1. WASSCE/SSSCE/NECO holders: Applicants must have six [6] passes (A1-D7/A-D) in all subjects including English language, mathematics, and Integrated Science and a minimum of C6 in three (3) passes in other relevant subjects (e.g. elective mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, applied electricity, geography etc).
  2. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Holders: applicant must have credits in at least five (5) GCE ‘O’ level subjects including English language and mathematics in addition to at least two (2) advanced level passes in other relevant subjects. (e.g. physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, technical drawing, metalwork, applied electricity etc).

Other qualifications:

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) with a minimum note of 10/20 in each of the relevant subjects.
  • Combined IGCSE and Cambridge – GCE ‘A’ and ‘O’ levels must have two relevant subjects at the Cambridge ‘A’ levels in addition to at least five (5) passes that include English and mathematics at the Cambridge ‘O’ level.
  • American Grades 12 with a final grade point of at least 3.0.
  • City & Guilds technician part II and advanced technician diploma, etc. in relevant subjects that are equivalent to the SSSCE/WASSCE or the GCE will be considered.

Diploma in ports and shipping management (regular/weekend)

There are three main options for applying for a diploma in ports and shipping management:

  1. WASSCE/SSSCE/NECO holders: applicants must have six [6] passes (A1-D7/A-D) in all subjects including English language and mathematics and a minimum of C6 in three (3) passes in any elective subjects.
  2. G.C.E. ‘O’ Level: credit in five [5] subjects (including Mathematics & English language) in addition to G.C.E. ‘A’ Level passes in any two (2) subjects.
  3. GBCE Candidates: credit passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects including English language and mathematics plus two (2) relevant elective subjects.

Diploma in nautical science

A diploma in Marine Engineering and Nautical Science programs is ideal for those who are interested in developing professional careers in the merchant marine and oil & gas industry. There are two main options for applying for the diploma:

  1. WASSCE/SSSCE/NECO holders: applicants must have six [6] passes (A1-D7/A-D) in all subjects including English language, mathematics, and integrated science and a minimum of C6 in three (3) passes in other relevant subjects (e.g. elective mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, applied electricity, geography etc).
  2. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Holders: applicant must have credits in at least five (5) GCE ‘O’ level subjects including English language and mathematics plus at least two (2) advanced level passes in other relevant subjects. (e.g. physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, technical drawing, metalwork, applied electricity etc).

  • All applicants for the diplomas must pass the mature students’ entry route.
  • All candidates may have to satisfy specific departmental requirements in addition to the general requirements.
  • Final admission onto all programs is based on successful completion of the physical and medical examinations at the Regional Maritime University Sick Bay.
  • Candidates for these programs must meet the conditions for cadetship training.
