Spain booked a second round spot in the World Cup after a last-gasp 2-2 draw against already eliminated Morocco. Spain's game in the Round of 16 will be against hosts Russia.
The 2010 champions started the night on top of Group B and maintained it thanks to scoring more goals than Iberian neighbours Portugal. Spain will be happy to have avoided a more difficult opposition in Uruguay.
The Europeans went behind when Andres Iniesta and captain Sergio Ramos somehow allowed Khalid Boutaib to seize upon a loose ball and run clear to score Morocco's first in the 14th minute.
But Iniesta made amends after 5 minutes of Spain conceding to set up Isco for a quickfire equaliser. La Roja thereafter struggled to break the resilient Moroccan defence.
SIago Aspas, tucked in a superbly improvised finish that survived a lengthy VAR review for offside, while Iran struck a late penalty, La Roja somehow finished top of the group.d Cup victory.
Spain had more under their sleeves as nother substitute, Iago Aspas, tucked in a superbly improvised finish. Referee Ravshan Irmatov, after deliberating with the VAR, decided that Aspas was not offside.
The Morocco players did not take kindly to conceding the late equaliser. Coaches of both sides had to called in to calm down a scuffle.
Spain play Russia on Sunday in the next stage of the tournament. Morocco meanwhile can bow out with their heads high having played some spectacular football.
