- This the first time in 80 years Germany has been knocked in the first round
- Two late goals form South Korea spelled doom for Germany's World Cup defence.
World Cup holder Germany have dramatically crashed out of the first round of the World Cup. This total shock is the first time the four-time world champions have been knocked out in the first round since 1938.
South Korea's two injury-time goals were awarded with the help of VAR. It is a historic victory for the Asians who had already been knocked out before Tuesday's game.
Joachim Low's side went into the game needing to match or better Sweden's result against Mexico. However Germany failed to break down Korea's disciplined defence.
Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min netted in the 92nd and 96th minutes respectively to hand South Korea a rather insignificant 3 points. Good chances came few and far between for Germany throughout the game.
The inclusion of Mesut Ozil and Mats Hummels did not do much to help Germany's cause. It was clear midway through the second half thatJoachi,'s Loew's plans had been fairly countered
Korea had nothing to play for but pride, gave everything in Kazan and got their reward at the dearth of the game. They were willing to attack a very uncomfortable German defence from the start.
At the end, Sweden's 3-0 victory over Mexico did not affect matters in Kazan. Germany needed no help in their self-destruction.
Whether Germany's failure spells the end of Low's glorious era in charge of the national team is unknown. But it continues the recent trend of former champions performing poorly in subsequent World Cups.
