- Sweden is the best defensive side so far at Russia 2018
- Some of the praise for the defensive solidity might be given to Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof
After the 2017/2018 season, many branded Manchester United's Victor Lindelof a flop. But contrary to popular opinion, the Sweden defender has made a great impact for the World Cup quarter finalists at Russia.
United are said to be looking for a new centre-back this summer. Names such as Bonucci, Alderweireld and even Umtiti have been mentioned in connection with the Red Devils.
However, it does not look like Lindelof, who was signed for about $40 million from Benfica only a year ago, is done. His performances for his country are reminder of the 23 tear-old's potential.
Sweden coach Janne Andersson has paired Lindelof in the heart of defence with experienced captain Andreas Granqvist. So far, it does not look like the two have been for less than 2 years.
The more interesting thing is that since the retirements of the Jonas Olsson and Olof Mellberg, Sweden has not had a good centre-back. In fact, they have been forced at times to even play CSKA Moscow midfielder Pontus Jansson alongside Granqvist.
Equal with Uruguay, Sweden have the best defensive record in the tournament. This has been attributed to the defensiveness of their tactics. But a more specific unit deserves credit.
Lindelof has often covered for Sweden's full backs and has been immense while playing the ball forward. For a centre-back, he is quick and has a good game-reading sense.
These were the qualities United no doubt saw when they got him from Benfica. How he has not been able to replicate this is a wonder. But Jose Mourinho should not be exempted from the debate.
The player has been played less than often owing to the fact that United have 4 or 5 other centre-backs. But no many are instant hits right when they walk into a club much less, a club like Man United.
Against England, Lindelof can be sure that all the necessary eyes at Manchester United will be on him. He will be judged as to how he fares against the most hyped side in the tournament and their striker Harry Kane.
But whatever happens, it will be unfortunate if Mourinho has not seen enough to be happy about.
