Vice president of the republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been appointed to the board of global partnership for sustainable development data at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN).
This appointment was made over the weekend and will see Bawumia join top executives in the UN including the chief executive officer of plan international, Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen, executive secretary, economic commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); John Pullinger, UK national statistician, Head of the Government Statistical Service (GSS), and Chief Executive of the UK Statistics Authority, United Kingdom; and Mahmoud Mohieldin, Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda, World Bank Group, is chaired by the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed.
This appointment will not be a permanent job especially when the UN board will hold a two-day working session from 10-11 July, 2018. To this end, Dr. Bawumia left the shores of Ghana on Sunday 8th July, 2018 for New York to participate in the 2-day meeting.
The Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD) is a global network bringing together governments, the private sector, and civil society organizations dedicated to using the data revolution to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The vice president is expected to return on Friday, July 13 after taking time to interact with the diaspora in the US.
Dr. Bawumia's appointment to the UN may confirm his international reputation as a renowned economist having served as a deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana and now the head of government's economic management team.
The various fiscal reforms by the vice president are believed to be achieving results especially with Ghana's debt to GDP ratio and the continued reduction of inflation rates.
