Dejan Lovren wants recognitionfor his performances believing he is underrated

- Lovren believes he does not get the credit he deserves for his performances

- The defender also believes that Luka Modric should win the award for FIFA best player award if Croatia become world champions

Liverpool and Croatia Dejan Lovren wants to be recognised as one of the best centre-backs in the game. The 29 year-old was speaking after Croatia's victory over England on Wednesday.

Cited as a consistently faltering defender, Lovren was blamed for quite a number of mistakes leading to goals against Liverpool last season. He has had similar criticisms while playing for Croatia.

But Lovren would not accept anything beneath his belief that he is one of the best defenders in Europe. For him, the criticism have been unfair and the credit too little.

However, last season the former Southampton and Lyon man helped Liverpool to the Champions League final where they lost to Real Madrid. But he has another chance at lifting a silverware with Croatia on Sunday.

Croatia have reached the final of the World Cup for the first time in their short history as a nation. It is also only their fifth appearance in the competition. Their previous best was a third place finish in France in 1998.

Lovren spoke to BeIN Sports after the semi final: “People said I had a difficult season but I don’t agree with that,”

“People said I had a difficult season but I don’t agree with that,” he told beIN Sport. “I showed why I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League and now with the national team, and now I’m in the World Cup final. I think people should recognise that I’m one of the best defenders in the world.”

The defender also had praise for international team-mate Luka Modric:“Modric is the best middle three player in the world and if we win this World Cup, he deserves the Ballon d’Or.”

Croatia came from behind to beat England in extra time. Kieran Trippier had given an early lead to the Three Lions but Croatia got back in the second half through Ivan Perisic.
