- The outgoing US ambassador to Ghana says Charlotte Osei is highly competent
- This follows her removal together with two other deputies on the grounds of incompetence and misbehaviour
- The Supreme Court has been petitioned against the removal of Charlotte Osei
Charlotte Osei is one of the most competent persons I ever met. These are the words of the outgoing U.S. ambassador to Ghana, Robert P. Jackson.
The ambassador, in a response to Charlotte Osei's removal as the electoral commissioner on Class FM, said the awards won by Charlotte Osei over the years are enough proof of her competence as the former EC chair of Ghana.
Reacting to claims of violating procurement laws of Ghana, the ambassador said;
“I do not know if she violated any laws, I understand from what I’ve heard and read that the decision she made to rebuild the website during the election after it was hacked may have been in contravention of Ghana’s procurement laws but I also understand that the time was of the essence, so, I think she, from what I know, acted on what she felt was the right thing to do at the time".
The special report from the Supreme Court committee chaired by the Chief Justice called for the removal of Charlotte Osei following what it termed as her ill-judgment on issues related to procurement laws.
In the statement which effected her removal, Nana Addo said the dismissal was on the grounds of "misbehavior and incompetence." But the American ambassador to Ghana shared a different point of view.
“I don’t want to get into a debate about whether she was rightly impeached or not, I think that is for the court to decide, but, I have been very troubled about the accusation that she is incompetent, some people have used that word, but Charlotte Osei is one of the most competent people I have ever met,” he argued.
The comments by the powerful US diplomat corroborates arguments that the decision by Akufo-Addo to fire Charlotte Osei was highly uncalled for.
So far, ace journalist, Kweku Baako, has filed a writ at the Supreme Court challenging her removal. Also, a concerned citizen has also sued the attorney general over the matter as she is seeking for all reasons against her declared null and void.
