Two French fans die while celebrating France's World Cup win

At least two French football supporters have died while celebrating France's victory over Croatia during the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.

According to reports in France, a 50-year-old fan died after breaking his neck when he sprung into a canal in the Alpine city of Annecy at the end of Les Bleus World Cup victory.

The second victim, thought to be in his 30s crashed his car into a tree as he celebrated the win near Saint-Felix.

Further reports in the country indicate that riot squads were forced to use tear gas to keep uncontrollable crowds in order.

A police source in Paris divulged to the media saying chaos broke out on Sunday night, July 15, shortly after France defeated Croatia to win the World Cup title.

"Rioting broke out soon after midnight as large crowds refused to disperse. Shops including the Publicis Drugstore close to the Arc de Triumphe were ransacked," the Daily Star quoted the source.
"Windows were smashed and officers who intervened were attacked. There have been scenes of absolute chaos that have spoiled the party."

France hammered Croatia 4-2 at the Luzhninki stadium to lift the biggest prize in World football for the second time in their history.

An own goal from Mario Mandzukic handed France the lead in the 18th minute, before Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead in the 38th minute from the penalty spot.

Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe scored a goal apiece in the second half, with Ivan Perisic and Mandzukic netting Croatia's consolations.
