Basic schools in rural areas beset by unqualified teachers and lack of infrastructure

The issue of how appalling the states of some basic and Junior Secondary Schools (JHS) are in the country has once again bitterly roared its head following a documentary about a school in the Northern Region.

A report carried out by Joy News on the state of the Djiradogo Presby school has led to the realization, or rather re-emphasization, of the fact that Ghana’s basic education system needs an uplift.

The school, which is located in the Kpandai District, lacks so many amenities needed to promote good teaching and learning.

The school building was not the best, with the structure built with sticks and roofed with dry leaves, in this modern age.

To make matters even worse, the teacher who is supposed to impact knowledge into the students lacked the right teaching skills.

To put it in right context, he lacked the qualification to teach, yet here he was in a classroom struggling to even communicate with his pupils.

When a teacher spells (misspells) the word ‘creating’ as ‘greating’, then one should know that the pupils he is teaching risk going home with the wrong ideas.

In addition, the teacher also found it difficult taking his pupils through Information Communication Technology (ICT) lessons, due to the lack of facilities and IT gadgets to demonstrate to the students.

On occasions when the teacher tended to look confused himself, it took the intervention of the circuit supervisor from the Kpandai Education office help out.
