Ghana's next EC boss to be Professor Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu

- President Akufo-Addo is likely to appoint a law professor as next EC chair

- Professor Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu comes in the wake of high controversies in the EC

- Her nomination is reported to be based on broad consultations with former EC boss, Afari Djan

YEN.com.gh has learned that Ghana's next electoral commissioner could be the academician, Professor Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu.

Information coming in from Myjoyonline.com shows that the presidency has to replace Charlotte Osei with another woman and this could be the academician who once failed to become a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

YEN.com.gh has also gathered that the decision by the president to settle on the law professor was based on some consultation with the former electoral commissioner, Afari Djan and some statesmen in the country.

The law professor has had a wide experience with international agencies like ECOWAS and the United Nations (UN). At ECOWAS, she took the position of Assistant UN Secretary-General in 2007 when she was appointed the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Rule of Law (DSRSG) in the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

Professor Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu could be best remembered when she was a member of the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) which heard victims of human rights abuses during military juntas tell harrowing stories as Ghanaians dealt with a troubled past.

As juicy as the offer of EC chair sounds, the law professor comes at a time when the electoral commission is currently in a troubled state.

The dismissal of Charlotte Osei and her two deputies sparked outrage especially among the opposition NDC which believes government is conspiring to rig future elections.

In the midst of all these controversies, Charlotte Osei issued a statement thanking friends and supporters for their prayers and support through these times.

After narrating the experience of surviving death threats and curses, Charlotte Osei believed her deeds as the EC boss - as seen in the 2016 elections - will be left for posterity to judge.
