- Now the father of the footballer is alleging that he has not spoken to his son in 5 years
A few weeks ago, it was reported that father of Nigeria national football team captain, John Mikel Obi was kidnapped prior to a crucial World Cup game. Obi disclosed this and said that he had paid a ransom for his father to be released.
It all seemed like the Obi family were returning to being a big happy family. However according to a recent report from the Nigerian media stable Daily Trust first cited by mynewsgh.com, the footballer's father is not happy.
Obi's father, indentified as Pa Obi, alleges that John Mikel has not spoken to him in five years. These five years saw his son only communicating with his mother and her only.
The recent kidnapping was the second time John Mike Obi's father had been kidnapped. The first was in 2011 in the Nigerian state of Jos.
The older Obi alleges that his son consciously avoids him due to reasons he knows nothing about According to him, there have been attempts at repairing the trust and relationship all to no avail.
Pa Obi also moved to quash belief that all parents of rich footballers were enjoying the luxury provided by their children. He is the exception, he objects
He is quoted as saying: “Isn’t that why kidnappers are targeting me? Because they think the money he makes, he ships it to me to make investments,” he said.
“It is an issue, but we don’t know what to do. It’s over five years now without a phone call from him to me. But he communicates with his mother.
Obi's father is reported as saying that the tension has reached a level where his son is preventing him from seeing his grandchildren. This situation he says, has left him frustrated.
