The former Heart of Lions midfielder who was jailed in Sweden over the assault on his former wife has been freed after spending barely a year in jail.
The Ghanaian midfielder Kwame ‘Conte’ Bonsu was handed a two-year prison sentence in Sweden after a court found him guilty of abuse and rape on his former wife.
The 22-year-old, prior to his conviction, played for second-tier side Gefle IF in Sweden after joining from Mjallby AIF two seasons ago but was accused of the act which took place in 2015.
He appealed his sentence which was reduced to a year and ten months but was freed after spending just a year.
22-year-old Kwame Bonsu, who played for the Gefle IF club, will be expelled from the Scandinavian country where he has lived since 2013, Gävle District Court said.
Bonsu was dismissed from his team with immediate effect.
Bonsu also paid 122,600 kronor ($14,000) in compensation to his wife, who is a Swedish national.
