4 reasons that prove the NDC rank and file still love Mahama

As the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepares to elect its flagbearer for the 2020 elections, John Dramani Mahama has once again come under the spotlight.

Mahama led the NDC to its worst ever defeat in an election after managing just 44.4% of the total votes during the last polls.

However, having recently given a hint that he will stand for president come 2020, the coming months will definitely prove key for the 59-year-old.

But he can take delight in the fact that he is still very much loved among members of the NDC, at least from the early indications.

From party executives to Members of Parliament and to the supporters; it appears that Mahama is held in high esteem.

Below are four signs that prove the NDC’s rank and file still love Mahama:

1. The attendance at Unity Walks

If you doubt that Mahama strikes a very cordial cord with the grassroots of the NDC, you would only have to look at the huge crowds that greeted him during the party’s numerous Unity Walks.

From Accra to Kumasi to Tamale to Wa; the former president was always cheered whenever he mounted a podium to deliver a speech. Obviously there would be some “fake fans” but the passion with which some of the party faithful welcome Mahama proves they still love him.

2. 94 MPs endorsement

There is no doubt that Mahama is the most popular face within the NDC currently. Although some key persons have also declared their intentions to represent the party as flagbearer, everything points to the fact that the hierarchy would still prefer Mahama.

The biggest indication was Tuesday’s endorsement of the former president to lead the party in the 2020 elections.

Out of 106 NDC MPs, a whopping 96 of them threw their weight behind Mahama to be entrusted as the party’s presidential candidate.

3. Continuous projection of his achievements

Can you count the number of times officials of the opposition NDC have projected and touted that achievements of Mahama on radio or on television?

If they didn’t love him, they would not do that. There are a few of his own party members who hold that he massively disappointed, but on the whole, Mahama has the backing of the majority.

In recent times, General Secretary Asiedu Nketia and other party executives have often sought to project Mahama’s achievements whiles he was president.

4. Comparing his government to that of Nana Addo

When a man is forgotten, he is let go for good. But that cannot be the case of Mahama when his party members continue to compare his government to that Nana Addo’s.

To most NDC supporters, Mahama is still their best bet for the 2020 elections and that can be imagined as the main reason why they often bring up this comparison.
