An ex-convict who was sentenced to death by firing squad in 1988 after being false accused of murder, Madam Grace Adom Agyare, has recounted how she spent countless days behind bars.
Speaking in an extensive interview with Otwinoko, Madam Grace Adom Agyare, who now happens to be a woman of God, explained that she was arrested on December 2, 1988 after she was accused of killing her ex-boyfriend.
According to her, her husband, with whom she had 3 children with, traveled outside the country in the 1980’s and she did not get to hear for him for years. She therefore had to sustain her family with any form of financial assistance that was available.

In the course of all this, she met and dated a man who she thought could help her financially but called off their relationship after 3 months when she realized the man was not forthcoming with financial assistance.
During the time she as dating, the man changed his driver after he cut off the old one to reasons best known to him.
5 months after her break-up with the said man, police received reports that Madam Grace Adom Agyare’s ex-boyfriend was missing but found his car in the possession of his former driver.

Upon interrogation, the driver revealed that he together with 2 other men had been hired by Madam Grace Adom Agyare to murder her ex-boyfriend.
Police therefore stormed Madam Grace Adom Agyare’s home in December 1988 and accused her of killing the man.
According to the police, the former driver of the man implicated her in the man’s murder and revealed that she had paid a sum of GHC 30, (300,000cedis then) to have the ex-boyfriend killed.
According to the driver, Madam Grace Adom Agyare, also gave them a sum of GHC 2, (20,000 Cedis) then to buy fuel, sell off the man’s car and return the cash to her.

All four people in the case including Madam Grace Adom Agyare, were sentenced to death by firing squad in 1989.
On the day of the execution, the former driver confessed to having framed Madam Grace Adom Agyare and another man up and asked that they be spared.
Madam Grace Adom Agyare was not executed but all three men were shot dead. She spent 14 years on death row and was later transferred to serve life imprisonment.
After 7 years of being transferred, she received her freedom under the auspices of the “Justice for all” program and was released in 2010.
She spent 21 years in prison for a crime she did not commit.
