Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has reportedly been handed over to the police after being filmed while driving.

The Egypt international started the new Premier League campaign on a bright note after leading the Reds to a 4-0 win over West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday.

However, the video was said to have been taken shortly after the game as the former Chelsea attacker was sighted scrolling through his phone as he sits in traffic in the driver's seat according to Liverpool Echo.

The reports also revealed that fans of the Egyptian star surrounded his car hoping he would sign for them or take a picture with him, but that never happened as he was engrossed with his phone.

He was said to have driven a few meters forward in the traffic, while still appearing to be on his phone.

And according to law in the UK, It is illegal to touch a phone while the engine is running as it can lead to three points on your licence, a driving ban or a £1,000 fine.

After sometime of not giving up, Salah eventually acknowledged the young fans by giving them a thumbs up before driving off.

Today a Liverpool spokesman told the ECHO: "The club, after discussion with the player, have made Merseyside Police aware of the footage and the circumstances surrounding its capture.

"We have spoken to the player also and will deal with any follow-up internally.

"Neither the club or player will be making any further comment on this matter."

Merseyside police tweeted: "We have been made aware of a video believed to show a footballer using a mobile phone whilst driving. This has been passed to the relevant department. Thanks for letting us know."

As of 6pm on Monday a video that had been widely shared had been taken down from the Facebook account which had posted it.

Road safety charity Brake told The Sun: "It is disappointing to see someone who is a role model to many thousands of football fans breaking the law and setting a bad example.

"Mobile phone use behind the wheel, in any form, is illegal and dangerous. Anything that distracts a drivers attention from the road, even for a split second, can lead to devastation, no matter how slowly they are travelling.

"Mobile phone use behind the wheel is all too prevalent and a crackdown is required to rid our roads of this menace."

The Egyptian forward reintroduced himself to the Premier League with a goal and a kind gesture to a young pitch invader in Liverpool's win over West Ham on Sunday.

Last season's Golden Boot winner opened the scoring for the Reds on the 19-minute mark, as the home side stormed to a 4-0 victory over the Hammers at Anfield.

Everything flowed smoothly for Jurgen Klopp's men on the day, but the match was in fact interrupted at one point when a young pitch invader leaped over the advertising hoardings and ran onto the field of play.

Sky Sports cameras captured the young boy as he made a beeline for Salah, who he immediately pulled in for a hug.

Salah dealt with the situation in a brilliant way, hugging the youngster, chatting to him, and quickly and kindly escorting him off the pitch.
