5 ministers allegedly plotting Akufo-Addo's defeat in 2020

It’s fair to say it hasn’t been a smooth ride for Nana Akufo-Addo since he was voted as President of Ghana some 18 months ago.

From his travels to appointments and to his sackings; everything he does seem to always be in the spotlight.

But what can you expect when you are the first gentleman of a free-speech country like Ghana?

Unfortunately for the President, though, he does not always have to speak before he comes under the spotlight.

Sometimes, by the mere fact that his name is mentioned in any controversial statement by another person could also get the media talking.

That is why early this week when Rev. Owusu Bempah claimed that certain appointees of the President are plotting his exit in 2020, it became a matter of public discussion,

The pastor, who many perceive to be a staunch supporter of the ruling NPP, may not have mentioned names but the rumour mail is already in full swing.

Here are five government appointees who are allegedly plotting Akufo-Addo's defeat in 2020:

1. Alan Kyerematen

Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, is a man who has always competed against Nana Akufo-Addo for the NPP’s flagbearership.

In 2008, 2012 and even in 2016 he contested against Nana Addo to become presidential candidate of the NPP but lost on all occasions. He has also often been very quiet, and doesn’t speak much on issues of government lately.

2. Mustapha Hamid

Mustapha Hamid is one of the very close persons to President Akufo-Addo, however, having been hit by the recent reshuffle, questions are being raised.

Reports in certain quarters suggest some 'Akyems' within government undermined him as Information Minister and that is believed to be what led to him being reassigned to the Zongo Ministry.

3. Kennedy Agyapong

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, is one of the most vocal personalities in the NPP.

The maverick lawmaker has constantly criticized his own government on several issues and it is alleged that he is unhappy about some decisions of Nana Addo.

4. Boakye Agyarko

Perhaps the most obvious among the lot, Boagye Agyarko’s name has popped up as one of the persons that would allegedly want to see the back of Nana Addo in 2020.

Having been sacked from his post as Energy Minister over the AMERI deal, Agyarko took to social media to respond by saying he will come out with his own version of the story at the right time. What could that mean?

5. Alfred Obeng

Former BOST CEO, Alfred Obeng is another person who makes this list. He was one of the key financiers of Nana Addo's campaign during the 2016 elections.

However, he was recently kicked out for alleged acts of corruption he perpetuated while occupying office as CEO of BOST.
