John Dramani Mahama hails from the Northern region of Ghana where he pursed his primary level at Achimota School. He proceeded with his secondary level at Ghana Secondary school in Tamale and then joined one of the best universities in Ghana, University of Ghana in Legon.

In 1981, John Mahama pursed a degree in history and he also holds a postgraduate diploma in communication studies, which he pursed back in 1986. While at the University of Ghana Legon, Dramani joined Commonwealth and became a member.

Mahama furthered his studies at one of the institutes in Moscow, Institute of Social Sciences in Soviet Union. He wanted to specialize more in social psychology and after putting much effort in his studies he was able to obtain a postgraduate degree back in the year 1988.

After John Dramani Mahama education completion, he acquired working experience by teaching history to secondary students for few years. He then made his returns to Ghana from Moscow where he furthered his studies and worked in Accra at Embassy of Japan from 1991 to 1995. In 1993, Mahama used to participate in a training course (a professional one) for ‘Overseas Public Relation Staff’ that was organized by ‘Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’, Tokyo.

He travelled to Nairobi in Kenya as well to participate in a training course that was organized and managed by RESA, Plan International. How did John Dramani Mahama join politics? Well, he was elected for a 4-year term to be Bamboi Constituency representative back in 1996. He was then appointed the Deputy Minister of Communications, back in 1997. After that post, in 1998 Mahama got promoted to be the Minister of Communications, in which he served from 1998 to 2001 in the month of January. At that time, National Democratic Congress, NDC, the ruling party, handed its power to the government of New Patriotic Party, NPP.

Drahami was then re-elected to represent Bamboi also referred to as Bole Constituency for another 4-year term back in 2001 and again in 2004. Alongside being the Bole Constituency representative, Dramani used to serve as Spokesman for minority parliamentary communications.
