- Some stakeholders of KNUST will be presenting a petition to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Friday, August 17, 2018
-This relates to the proposed plan of the university to convert the University Hall and the Unity Hall into mixed halls
- Separate lawsuits have already been filed at the courts to prevent the execution of the plan to convert them to mixed halls
Information available to YEN.com.gh shows that some people are about to present a petition to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over plans to convert two halls to mixed halls.
Students, alumni and associates of the University Hall, also known as Katanga and the Unity Hall, also known as Conti are fighting a decision to convert the halls into mixed ones.
This follows the decision of the authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to ensure that women are granted residence in the halls.
The petition, YEN.com.gh understands, will be presented on Friday, August 17, 2018 to Otumfuor, who is the Chancellor of the university.
The aim is to ensure that the Asantehene uses his authority to halt the proposed conversion of the halls.
Stakeholders will be requesting the Chancellor to order a stay of the proposal until a meaningful and sustainable solution can be found to the perennial accommodation and security crisis on campus.
In that regard, they will be converging at the Kumasi Children’s Park at 9.00am, from where they will march peacefully to the Manhyia Palace to present the petition to the Asante monarch.
Meanwhile, both halls have filed separate lawsuits at the court to have the university’s management rescind its decision about the conversion of the halls of residence to mixed gender to boost female student population.
