Shasta Belinda Quaye is a female barber at ‘Bankye’s Classic Haircut’.
Her shop is situated at Korle-gonno, a few meters away from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra-Ghana.
She recalls how she was referred to the shop as a cashier by a companion of hers and was employed instantly.
Upon assumption of her new role as cashier, Shasta never imagined herself handling any barbering equipment.
What heightened her skepticism were the discouraging and repulsive words of clients who frequently expressed resistance to the idea of a lady barbering them.
It all happened one day, when a sixteen and a nine year old clients showed up.
With none of her male superiors around to deliver the service, Shasta boldly volunteered to give the job a try.
“It was my first time but I wasn’t scared and I did not panic.” She recounts.

Shasta says the egoistic nature of guys makes them express negativity in the idea of her cutting their hair.
According to her, but she does not allow these sentiments to discourage her.
She explained that she sees her occupation as a great opportunity which needs to be handled with focus and commitment.
"I would like to encourage the youth, especially ladies that if you can’t further your education, you can always make productive use of your hands. Never give up and please step up Ladies." She added.
