A family of five have reportedly died at Akokofoto in Dansoman after their home was engulfed by fire.

The deceased were three children, including a three-week-old baby, their mother and their grandmother.

Narrating the incident, an eyewitness said the fire started at dawn but everyone around was powerless to stop it from spreading.

The fire subsequently spread into the building, where the family was trapped, burning all of them to death.

I was fetching water around 5:30am when I saw a thick smoke high up the sky. I heard a woman and some children shouting for help from the building.

“It was hard getting inside the building with smoke covering everywhere. We eventually got the woman and her children but they died shortly after we got to them,” an eyewitness, Courage Avickson told Accra-based Citi FM.

He added that the fire service arrived rather too late to quench the fire, with the police also following suit to convey the dead bodies.

This comes after a similar incident was recorded in Dansoman a year ago, which led to the destruction of many properties.

In that incident, a harmless fire which was intended to burn rubbish ended up destroying two cars, three air conditioners, and a poly tank.
