Brazil great Ronaldino pays tribute to late Kofi Annan

- Ronaldinho was an ambassador for United Nations causes during Annan's reign as secretary-general

- Annan passed away in Switzerland aged 80

Former Brazil international Ronaldinho Gaúcho has paid tribute to celebrated Ghanaian diplomat Kofi Annan who passed away over the weekend. Annan, a former United Nations (UN) general secretary died aged 80.

According to his wife, Annan died peacefully in Switzerland. He had been battling with an illness for only a short while.

Annan as an envoy of peace encouraged the employment of modes such as sports, particularly, football, to spread the message of tolerance and respect. Ronaldinho was one of the UN's ambassadors under Annan's reign.

The former FIFA world best player wrote (as translated from Portuguese): Go in peace, Kofi Annan One of the great leaders I've had the honor of meeting. You have always held out your hand with compassion and empathy for all peoples. To serve as an example to all the rulers.

Ronaldinho seemed to enjoy his role as an ambassador for varied causes after he retiring from competitive football. It will come as no surprise that he mourns with the rest of the world of the death of Mr Annan.

Details on the burial and funeral of the late UN boss have not been disclosed by his family. Many Ghanaians hope and believe that he will be buried in his native Ghana.
