- The former presidents have been perceived to have some friction in their relationship
- Mr Mahama is expected to announce his bid to contest for NDC flagbearer post for 2020
Former Presidents John Mahama and Jerry John Rawlings have held a meeting on the future of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The talks were held on Wednesday, August 22 in the office of Mr Rawlings.
In a move seen as an attempt to offer an olive branch, Mr Mahama paid a call on Mr Rawlings after recent years of perceived tension between the two. Mr Rawlings, who is the founder of the NDC, has been an avid critic of the party's leadership.
In perhaps an unforeseen turn of events, Mr Rawlings has developed a rather close relationship with President Nana Akufo-Addo who is from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The friction between Mr Rawlings and the current crop of his party's leadership is a phenomenon that his wife also shares. Mrs Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has on occasions said that the NPP was more preferable to the NDC.
But Mr Mahama stated the need to consult the founder on party issues and commended him for re-energising the party’s Council of Elders and participating actively in its meetings. Heis expected to run to lead the NDC for 2020.
President Rawlings on his part, expressed the hope that candidates with the ability and capacity would be allowed to evolve from the electoral processes in the party. He promised not be a stumbling block to any candidate in the upcoming elections.
