- Special prosecutor, Martin Amidu, claims his bank account is been credited by unknown persons
- Martin Amidu says he has directed his bankers to return the cash to its senders and trace their origions
The special prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has raised concern over some mysterious payments being made into his bank account.
According to him, some heavy amount of money in the past days were deposited in his bank account from an unknown source.
In an extensive open letter, Martin Amidu narrated how he was met by the news when he once visited a branch of his bank to withdraw some cash via cheque.
"I was amazed when I went to one of the branches of my Bank to make a cash withdrawal by cheque from my current account only to be informed that the balance to my credit on the account had leaped more than five-fold1from my last balance on 7th July 2018. My account had been credited on 19th July 2018 with a transferred payment,” he disclosed in his latest epistle.
Martin Amidu further noted that he had ordered his bankers to return the unusual money credited to his account and trace the unknown payer.
Since his appointment as Ghana's first special prosecutor, Amidu's office has been inundated with several allegations and reports of corrupt government officials both past and present.
So far, the president has inaugurated a board for the office of the special prosecutor and Martin Amidu has revealed that he will only be considering 'serious' allegations made so far.
Government, through the Akufo-Addo administration, established the office of the special prosecutor to investigate and prosecute specific categories of cases and allegations of corruption and other criminal wrongdoing, including those involving alleged violations of the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663) and cases implicating public officers and politically-exposed persons.
Martin Amidu is Ghana's first ever special prosecutor. His appointment and swearing-in form part of Akufo-Addo's resolve to fight corruption once and for all.
