- Gary Mabbutt's leg eaten by a rat while he was asleep
- The 57-year-old went to visit his daughter in South Afric
Former Tottenham and England defender Gary Mabbutt said a rat ate part of his foot while he was asleep on holiday in South Africa.
The 57-year-old was quickly flown back to the UK for surgery and spent a week in hospital. The 16-cap England international, has type 1 diabetes and has little feeling in his feet.
"All the opponents that I've played against and I finally get taken out by a rat," Mabbutt told BBC Radio 5 live.
The incident happened when he visited his daughter six weeks ago, who is working at the Kruger National Park.
About an hour later, Mabbutt felt a bite on a thumb while sleeping, then saw his foot was covered in blood.
Mabbutt said he still needs daily hospital treatment for his injuries.
The former Spurs man said he injects insulin seven times per day, and tests his blood 10 times per day.
He almost lost a leg and had to have emergency surgery because of blocked arteries in 2016. He can no longer run or kick a ball again.
