Election 2020 and Mahama's unsettled decision for woman vice president

Election 2020 and Mahama's unsettled decision for woman vice president

The former president, John Dramani Mahama, has made known his intentions to contest the 2020 elections.

John Dramani Mahama in a video posted on Facebook revealed that now is the time for him to serve Ghanaians and also continue the various development projects he started before losing Election 2016.

Following the death of his former vice president - Amissah-Arthur - the major question on the mind of Mahama will be the best replacement for the soft-spoken Amissah-Arthur.

Already, there are high suspicions that John Mahama's camp might be putting together a very appealing campaign team for Ghanaians to elect.

In fact, it is highly expected for John Mahama to go in for a female vice presidential nominee who appeals much to Ghanaians and also with less or no baggage.

There are two political figures under the former president's administration that could best be considered for the role of vice presidential nominee.

These are the former minister for foreign affairs, Hanna Tetteh and former education minister, Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang. Both political professionals are rooted in vast experience and influence.

Hanna Tetteh was recently appointed the director-general of the UN's office at Nairobi, Kenya. She succeeds Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde who was previously appointed a special representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU).

Considering her extensive stay in active politics, it will be no surprise if Mahama chooses her as his vice president.

Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang is the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and also a former minister for education.

The learned professor exercised an appreciable level of experience to keep Ghana's educational structure afloat. Being a staunch critic of the free SHS policy, it could be highly strategic of Jane to play the role of vice president.

Mahama and 2020 elections

Already, all 10 regional party chairmen of the NDC have endorsed Mahama and also advised him to lead the party. In a draft letter, all chairmen signed in approval of John Mahama being the next flag bearer of the NDC yet again.

The former president, John Mahama, has paid a courtesy call on the founder of the NDC, Jerry John Rawlings. This move can be seen by all as a very strategic one if indeed the former one-term president is poised to contest elections yet again in the 2020 elections.

It is no secret that Jerry Rawlings has been the fulcrum upon which several elections are positioned hence the strategy by Mahama to pay a courtesy call on him.

Already, Jerry Rawlings has had his take on the politics of the NDC as he attributed their defeat in 2016 to greed and corruption. There have been various pictures of an obvious rift between the former president and some key officials of the party.
